Finding faith when you just can’t

A diagnosis of cancer can be a test of anyone’s faith. The truth is that you really never know how you’re going to react until it happens to you.

If you do believe in God, but feel angry or betrayed, you may want to talk to your religious leader or bring your concerns right to God’s doorstep. It may help to keep talking about it, and praying about it, even if you don’t want to.

Hopefully, you will find your way back to that place where your belief once again comforts you.

If you can’t believe but want to

A great place to start is by praying for the
willingness to believe. This may feel more authentic to you.

You may also want to seek counsel from a religious leader, or someone you know who is a true believer. They can offer you guidance and may be a great source of comfort. You can also read this brochure about God and faith.

Search for scripture

The Bible is full of stories of people who questioned their faith, and had it restored. If you go to Lifeway.com, you can use their online Bible search function to find specific passages that speak directly to your heart.

Here are some scripture passages that you may find comforting:

"If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes." Mark 9:23 (NIV)

Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here I am. Isaiah 58:9 (NIV)

In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33 (NIV)

Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. Psalm 56:3 (NKJV)

Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 9:10 (NIV)
